Simple Rainbow with Clouds

Simple Rainbow with Clouds

The inspiration for this simple rainbow with clouds project was from a picture that I found online. My daughter really likes rainbows. While I was looking for pattern ideas, I ran across a cute little picture of a rainbow with clouds. I used the concept however I wanted to make some changes since it wasn’t exactly what I wanted it to look like.

I imported the graphic into Inkscape and began manipulating it. The finished pattern looked much different than the original. You can download the original graphic I used for inspiration here.

This pattern is really fun and simple as there are only 15 pieces. It was nice also because it gave me a opportunity to use some pieces of scrape pine I had left over from some other projects.

Lets get started…

To start the project I downloaded a graphic of a rainbow with clouds from the internet. There are a lot of graphics to choose from out there on the web and I settled on one that looked pretty nice to me.

Create the Pattern

I imported the picture into Inkscape and then started to manipulate the graphic. I spent some time moving things around quite a bit to make the graphic look like what I thought a rainbow with clouds pattern should look like.

The finished pattern requires 2 sheets of paper printed in landscape so I had to tape it together.

Select Material and Apply the Pattern

To give the project a look of 3-D, the 2 large clouds at the base of the rainbow were cut from a scrap piece of 2×4. I found some other pieces of pine that were leftover from projects that ended up in my scrap pile.

Next I sprayed the back of the pattern with some 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Spray Adhesive and positioned it onto the wood.

Start Cutting

For this project I chose a #5 Pegas Modified Geometry blade for the large clouds because they were 2×4. For the remainder of the pieces I used a #3 Pegas Modified Geometry blade since they were 3/4″. They are available at Amazon and other woodworking supply stores.

I then dry fitted the pieces to make sure it was fitting properly.

I removed the pattern from each piece. For the pieces where the pattern stuck, I used some mineral spirits to loosen the pattern from the wood.

Sanding and Shaping

The next step is to shape and sand. Lots and lots of sanding and shaping. This is the most laborious part of this project.

Paint and Finish

After shaping and sanding, a paint job was needed on this project. I have to admit, I didn’t know what the order of colors of the rainbow was so I had to look it up. I included the color scheme on the pattern. It turns out that from top to bottom the colors are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

The paints I used for the rainbow are the Apple Barrel brand gloss acrylic craft paint that I purchased from Walmart.

To add a little extra pizazz to the rainbow, we decided to apply a small amount of Sulyn Extra Fine Crystal Diamond Glitter.

The last step of this project is to glue it all together. The children were happy with the way this one turned out.

Conclusion

This simple rainbow with clouds pattern is really easy and can be cut out in just a few hours. Shaping and sanding will take some time to complete. This would be a great segmentation project for beginner scroll saw artists.
