Simple Intarsia Cross With Dove

Simple Intarsia Cross With Dove

-- Last updated on December 13th, 2022 --

I love how an intarsist can take different species of wood, cut pieces out of them, shape them, sand them, and then glue them onto a board and make it appear to be a 3-D painting. Intarsia to me is such a fascinating art form and is probably my favorite type of scroll sawing.

With Easter and Passover approaching closer, I have already started to make several cross projects. This year however I wanted to try something different and make a few intarsia crosses as well as my regular fretwork projects.

I am actually very new at doing intarsia so I wanted a pattern that would be fairly simple so that I can do several of them in a short period of time. This is the reason that I made the simple intarsia cross with dove pattern.

The pattern that I made was actually inspired by a Sue Walker pattern that I found online. I used the concept but I wanted to make some changes to the dove itself. Rather than modifying her original pattern, using Inkscape, I created a brand new pattern and used a graphic of a flying dove I also found online as a reference.

This pattern is really simple as there are only 6 pieces. I used maple for the dove and cherry for the cross. The dove was raised above the cross with a shim. I also raised the right wing (picturing the dove flying away from you) slightly higher than the cross but lower than the left wing and the body of the dove.

You can download the pattern below.

Conclusion

This scroll saw pattern is really easy and can be cut out in less than one hour. Shaping and sanding will take some time to complete. This would be a great intarsia project for beginner scroll sawers.
