Is There a Critter in Your Workshop?

-- Last updated on February 13th, 2021 --

There may be one Critter that you will actually be glad to have in your workshop. The Critter 118 Siphon Gun is an easy to use sprayer gun, designed for smaller projects. This makes it ideal for scroll saw projects.

When I bought the Critter 118 Siphon Gun, I was a little skeptical about it, so it just sat there on the shelf. That was until I ran out of polyurethane one day and I didn’t feel like making the trip to Walmart to get more.

I could not believe how easy it was to use and how nice the finish was. My only regret is that I wish that I had used it sooner.

How Does the Critter 118 Siphon Gun Work?

All you need is the Critter itself and a 3/4 hp tank-less air compressor.

The Critter 118 Siphon Gun uses standard 16-ounce mason jars so you can easily switch to a different finish in just a few seconds.

The Critter’s circular spray pattern is adjustable from 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches. The only two adjustments are the air pressure on the compressor and the height of the nozzle valve on the Critter Sprayer.

Minwax polyurethane is the finish I use for almost all of my indoor projects. For use in the Critter, I mix it in a mason jar with about an ounce of mineral spirits. I usually give the project several coats and lightly sand between each coat.

Clean Up

The Critter requires very little clean up since only air flows through the gun. When finished with the Critter, simply replace the jar of finish with a jar of thinner. Swish it around and give it a few sprays and put it away until next use. As for the jars, just put the lids back on.

One thing to keep in mind when using the Critter with small scroll saw projects is that you do have to be careful not to blow the project off the table. This was one of the lessons that I learned early on.

I have found for larger projects such as hand routed signs, the Critter is very easy to use with beautiful results.

Conclusion

Before I found the Critter 118 Siphon Gun, I used polyurethane in a spray can. The cost was around $8.00 per 11.5 oz can, so it got to be very expensive. Now, instead of spray cans, I can buy the same finish by the quart for around $13.00.

It is also possible to get it by the gallon which is a huge cost savings. In my estimation, the Critter 118 Siphon Gun has more than paid for itself within the first few days of using it.
